Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind - No Light Escapes

Her name was Sadie but they all said it like Siddy or Sid, like she was a place and not a person or a boy and not a girl, and when she was very little she enjoyed the trips to the log home because those long drives relaxed her, watching the passing thin shrubs turn into thicker stripes of white birch, and then the birch turn into hardy elms, all along the road, and then those elms faded into ridged oaks as wide as the tires on the car that drove them, and she could tell how far north they were by the type of forest without having to ask anyone, and that calmed her, not speaking. She watched the trees to see the change in shape and height, but she searched the dark spaces in between them too. She looked for white-tailed deer, and when she found them - a doe and three wobbly spotted fawns, or a lone drooling buck, she did not cry out or tug her sleeping brother’s arm or kick her father’s chair. She stayed quiet. She let the something special between her and the deer remain unknown.
