laptop noon, glasses three o’clock, coffee four fifteen, three fuchsia flowers, one half dead/half alive next to the salt and pepper one fifty, crumbs covering the evergreen colored faux wood table top trimmed by a grooved aluminum whose seem catches the head phones, at eight thirty every time I adjust. Each person that walks in either knows to step over the brown rug stained with dried up street salt that has a curl at the end high enough for toes to catch or they trip. The kind of trip that reminds you , ” hey motherfucka, be present.” The everyone sees and maybe smiles to themselves about because we’ve all experienced that “oh shit everyone saw that didn’t they” kind of trip. The play it cool and make it look funnier or like you meant to do that kind of trip. Two of the three of the regulars, now surely retired, who probably frequent the coffee house because the routine of coming here in some way resembles the place that once needed them, or required them to be there, gathered around the end that was curled to perform for the few early birds that made it out that morning. They entertain each other here, and probably don’t recognize each other on the street. I know none of their names, only their faces, and coffee table habits. The last of the three sat in a new spot today, near the window, as a way to as he said to another, try out the light and see if sitting in that new spot next to the window might force him in some way to be more aware of his posture. People pay attention to posture. The years of teaching still rest on his back. He watched as the other two performed and when they left, he stood and slowly walked to address the tripping hazard. He saw the problem and fixed. Sometimes we get caught up in amazement, in positive or negative way, and forget that some things don’t actually take a whole lot of effort they just take action. Nobody has tripped since he made the move. He looks good in that light. Everyone has noticed. It’s helping his posture.
